Mangrove bioluminescence

Inky black as sun slips behind mogote

Stars above,

But hazy and indistinct without glasses.

Dishes in lagoon prompt sparkle of shooting stars out in cascading ripples,

Bioluminescence light up the soft fall of residual raindrops

And wavelets that lap against the dark pockets of rocks.

Cue delighted giggles as we all turn to children

Diving in to swim in the stars.

Magic as the algae drip off my skin in effervescent sparkles

That make me glitter like diamonds.

Mundane movements in the water

Swishing of arms side to side

Become a thing of wonder

Eddies of light caught behind the crook of my arm like wells of fairy dust

Fingers limned in light that I send forth in growing concentric circles to hit the dock.

Delight as I enter my mermaid era

As the students splash and shriek

We feel like princesses bathed in the CGI glow of 20Th Century Fox impersonating another world

That exists here on earth.

Redemption in the laughter

Magic at the end of misery

And then the sky opens

The ocean lights up in aquatic fireworks.

And we run, dripping,

Grasping rubber boots and headlamps

Through the mosquitos

To the haven of tents,

To wait out the storm,

And eventual boat in the morning to take us to AC, showers, and the next adventure.
