I’m here in Puerto Rico sitting down for the first moment of “free time” we’ve had since arrival. The day we arrived we (the team from Toronto - 5 people) met up with the team from Texas (9 people) and drove out to our airbnb in the mountains near El Yunque National Forest.
We’ll be based here for the first 10 days as we train and organize all of our (extensive) gear. It is really beautiful—very rainy and humid but also not too ridiculously hot. There was a window-shaking thunder and rain storm the first evening we were here that then caused a 6hr power outage the next day. At this airbnb have a view of the lowlands leading to San Juan, but the light and perspective makes it challenging to photograph and do it justice.
So far we have been going through gear and inventorying it (ie which lizard bags are in which box, and where are the spare batteries again?) and doing general training on how to catch lizards, paint lizards, and set up plots. Tomorrow will be our first full day of data collection where we paint and photograph each and every lizard in a circle of a 10m radius. Fingers crossed for minimal rain!
